What This Pattern Is

Container orchestration and networking — Docker, compose stacks, custom bridge plugins, and the mental model of “what is actually happening on the wire.” Covers both operational use (deploying services, managing lifecycles) and architectural understanding (network namespaces, overlay drivers, container DNS).

How It Emerged

The knowledge started as frustration. Docker networking confused me in ways that documentation didn’t resolve — the gap between “it works” and “I know why it works” was too wide. I started keeping notes, building minimal reproductions, tracing network calls.

Teaching forced the breakthrough. When interns needed to understand Docker networking for a project in 2024, I had to turn intuitive knowledge into explicit steps. That process — finding the right analogy, anticipating which wrong mental models beginners carry — completed my own understanding. The teaching didn’t follow the learning; it was the final stage of it.

The custom bridge plugin came out of a production constraint: default overlay networking had latency characteristics that didn’t fit the use case. Having the conceptual foundation meant the implementation was a matter of engineering, not discovery.

Rising. Infrastructure-as-code and container tooling keep evolving (Podman, rootless containers, WASM workloads), and each shift creates new versions of the same underlying networking and lifecycle problems. The core mental model transfers; the surface details keep changing — which suits this learning pattern well.
